Chips and cracks in your windshield are not only unsightly, they’re dangerous. When our vehicles suffer windshield damage, it’s imperative to get your windshield repaired or replaced as soon as you can. If you drive a vehicle with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) technology, then you’re going to need a windshield calibration.
All the safety systems that come with your vehicle, like lane-keeping assist and automatic emergency braking, fall under the umbrella of ADAS. Much of the technology that keeps these systems working is embedded into the windshield of your vehicle or is positioned near it. If these systems aren’t working properly you are compromising your safety and the safety of everyone else on the road.
ADAS calibration is the process of ensuring that your vehicle’s safety systems function correctly. This process is specifically important after you have a windshield replacement. Many modern vehicles are equipped with safety technologies like forward-collision warning which rely on sensors and cameras mounted on or near the windshield.
Cameras need to be properly aligned and calibrated after you have your windshield replaced so that these safety systems continue to work properly. If you skip the ADAS calibration of your new windshield, you will be putting yourself and others at serious risk.
There are many reasons why ADAS calibration is essential after a windshield replacement.
The sensors and cameras embedded in or around your new windshield rely on precise alignment to gather accurate data from your vehicle’s surroundings. They need to detect objects in your path and ensure your vehicle stays within its lane. Any misalignment in the windshield ADAS technology can cause these systems to fail or provide inaccurate readings.
Systems like collision warning and adaptive cruise control depend on the camera in your windshield to function properly. Without ADAS calibration, these systems might not detect obstacles or adjust the vehicle’s speed when needed. Both of these scenarios reduce everyone’s safety.
A windshield that has not been calibrated might trigger false alerts or warnings. This can be frustrating and confusing. Misalignment can cause your ADAS systems to detect issues that aren’t there. This can lead to system resets and costly unnecessary repairs.
Vehicle manufacturers recommend that calibration be conducted after all windshield replacements if the vehicle is equipped with ADAS technology. If you fail to follow their recommendations it could affect your warranty or the vehicle’s overall safety certification. Plus, if you’re in an accident due to your systems not working properly, it could impact your insurance claim and liability.
There are two types of calibration.
Dynamic Calibration: This type of calibration is performed while your vehicle is being driven. This is done to allow the camera and sensors to adjust and calibrate to real-life scenarios on the road.
Static Calibration: This type of calibration is done when the vehicle is stationary. It involves setting the vehicle up with a precise alignment system that checks the camera’s position. The technician will use specialized equipment to ensure the cameras and sensors are properly aligned with the vehicle’s systems.
You can, but we wouldn’t recommend driving your vehicle without ADAS calibration after you have a new windshield installed simply because you can put yourself and others in danger. The cameras and sensors rely on the windshield to transmit accurate data, and it could malfunction without calibration. This means you not only lose important safety features, but are putting you and others at risk on the road.
ADAS calibration should be done right after your windshield is replaced. It is typically part of the process for many reliable auto glass repair shops. However, if you’ve recently had your windshield replaced and haven't had the ADAS calibration, you should contact an auto glass repair company and make an appointment as soon as possible.
