Windshield Wiper Replacement: What You Need to Know

Windshield wipers are tiny warriors that provide us with the gift of sight in the darkest of times. They’re on the front lines, defending our visibility when driving in a storm, so they need to be in tip-top shape at all times. When are you supposed to replace your windshield wipers? It’s a question you’ve probably mulled over—and now you’ll have an answer.

According to professional auto glass technicians, windshield wipers should be replaced every six months to a year. However, there are many factors that go into deciding whether it’s time to replace them. Here are some common signs:

You Can’t See When You Drive

If your windshield wipers leave behind streaks, film, smearing, or anything that obstructs your view while driving in a storm, it's time to have them checked. They likely need the blades replaced at the very least. This is a simple process, but we still recommend hiring a professional. One mistake, and you could find yourself stuck in a storm without functioning wipers.

They Jump Around

If your wipers don’t glide smoothly across the windshield and instead chatter or make jagged movements, they need attention. This could be caused by worn or dirty wiper blades, a dirty windshield, issues with the wiper arms, or even a lack of lubrication.

They Show Visible Damage or Wear

Cracks, tears in the rubber, or blades that feel hard to the touch are clear signs it’s time for a replacement. Another giveaway is a bent or damaged frame—the part that holds the blade to the arm. Visible damage like this is a definite sign to install new wipers.

Should I Clean My Windshield Wipers Regularly?

Yes! You should clean your wipers once a month, and it’s super simple. All you need is a microfiber cloth and a cleaning solution. This can be wiper fluid, a mix of mild dish soap and water, or a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water. Just dampen the cloth with your solution and gently wipe the blades. Repeat until they’re free of residue.

How Do I Maintain the Life of My Wipers?

There are several ways to extend the life of your wiper blades:

  • In cold weather, lift your wipers to prevent them from freezing to the windshield. If they do freeze, defrost them before turning them on—activating frozen wipers can damage the motor.
  • Use wiper fluid every time you clear debris. Dry wiping can tear the blades, reducing their effectiveness.
  • Use silicone spray on your blades to help them glide more smoothly and prevent hardening.
  • Replace your blades every 6 to 12 months for optimal performance.

Maintaining and regularly cleaning your wipers and windshield helps keep them in top shape. Wipers that obstruct your visibility or show signs of wear should be replaced right away. You never know when the next storm will hit.
